Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The main season is May–June and September–October for clear views and moderate temperatures. The monsoon (Jul–Aug) can bring landslides; winters (Nov–Apr) are very cold with snow blocking high routes.

How to Reach

  • By Air: Nearest major airports: Pantnagar (domestic) and Dehradun (Jolly Grant). Continue by road to Pithoragarh → Dharchula.
  • By Rail: Nearest railheads: Kathgodam / Tanakpur. Taxis & buses connect onward to Pithoragarh and Dharchula.
  • By Road: Well-connected Uttarakhand highways to Dharchula via Almora / Champawat / Pithoragarh.

Permits

This region lies near the international border and typically requires inner-line permits issued through the local administration at Dharchula (and checks by security agencies). Foreign nationals may require additional documentation. Carry valid ID. Always verify the latest rules before travel.

Weather & Altitude

Expect high-altitude conditions: strong sun, rapid weather changes, and chilly nights. Pack layered clothing, rain protection, sturdy trekking shoes, gloves, and a warm cap. Hydrate well and allow for acclimatization days.

Local Culture

Respect local customs and temple etiquette (modest attire, remove footwear where required). Support community-run homestays and purchase local handicrafts to positively impact the region.

Travel Tips

  • Carry government-issued ID and multiple photocopies for checkpoints.
  • Mobile networks can be patchy; inform family of your route in advance.
  • Keep a basic medical kit (altitude meds only on doctor’s advice).
  • Leave no trace: bring back all non-biodegradable waste.
